Coonhounds

Meet Juniper

We rescued Juniper through American Black and Tan Coonhound Rescue (ABTCR), based on a picture and an email. She came to us from Alabama in October 2016, the month after we got married. We feel so lucky that she turned out to the the best dog. She is always happy, even when you’re trying to scold her. She blew me away in beginner obedience class, proving how smart she is. She is people, dog, cat, and chicken friendly (with a little training), so provides expert watchdog service for our flock. Her favorite activity is our off-leash hiking with her dog friends. Juniper had an Embark panel done to reveal she is:

-54.3% Black and Tan Coonhound

-22.9% Bluetick Coonhound

-17.4% Labrador Retriever

-5.4% Siberian Husky

100% the sweetest pea! We think the results seem spot on, with her hound look and song, lab-leaning personality, and curly q tail.

Meet Harley

We rescued Harley through KNine Rescue, after we made the decision to pause on fostering. We felt Juniper was at an age where she would still enjoy the introduction of a second resident dog. He was born in Virginia on October 31st, 2021, and ended up on the euthanasia list with his mom and siblings at a rural shelter. Once with a foster home, he and a few siblings got Parvo. Thankfully it was caught early and all made a full recovery. Harley is still a puppy, and has mastered sit but not down. He loves to play with the cats, though they don’t love to play with him. He leaves the chickens alone, and relentlessly wants to be with Juniper. He has spent a lot of time with furry and human friends, and at our local gym. Harley had an Embark panel done to reveal he is:

-65.8% Bluetick Coonhound

-34.2% Treeing Walker Coonhound

He is 100% hound dog! We are interested to see his behavior compared to Juniper!

Daisy (Foster)

Daisy (FKA Gemma) came to us with ABTCR on April 6th thanks to the Hound Pilot. She may be our oldest foster yet, guessed to be 6 or 7 (Juniper’s age). What a dream this lil lady is, with ears for days! She is shorter, but stocky, and may have recently had puppies (and who knows how many prior litters). She is pretty quiet, saving her voice for special occasions, and not indoors. She takes great direction with “No” in a firm voice, but does not know any commands. This lady loves a comfy bed or couch, second only to attention from people. She is a dream for a family with cats, as she is easy going with the two resident cats, and avoids Louis (meanie) well. She is very gentle when taking treats, and is potty trained already. Her only quirk is her nibbling to show affection when she gets excited, and it’s hard not to go on and on about what an easy dog she is to integrate into our lives. She was adopted by a wonderful family in western New York, who has a darling 12 year old coonhound to keep her company.

Rowett (Foster)

Rowett came to us through NECR via P.E.T.S. Animal Rescue Road Trips at 3am on December 19, 2020. He has turned out to be Juniper’s favorite foster! They play every day, inside and outside, with her rarely rebuffing his attention. Rowett has a zest for life and is always happy. He loves people, and will rest at your feet and follow you room to room. He loves spending time in the backyard, and was smitten when it snowed (twice so far)! He rolls around in the grass and snow, loves fetch, and you’d often mistake his legs for springs when he gets going! He is a 3(ish) year old pocket coonie, around 30 pounds, and can definitely stand to gain weight. He, like fosters before him, love Bark Box toys. He really loves anything he can grab, so lucky for us he is very responsive to his name and “no.” While Rowett likes treats, he is the least food motivated hound (mix) we’ve had. He is very interested in the cats, and is starting to learn they want nothing to do with him. He has learned “sit” and we are working on “down.” Rowett is also starting to learn patience, with the release word “okay!” He came to us just after receiving heartworm treatment, and tested negative in January. He has been adopted by a couple in MA, and will surely make friends with their neighbor Golden Retriever!

Penny (Foster)

Sweet Penny is the youngest foster HnH has hosted yet! At a springy 5 months old, Penny came to us via ABTCR on August 15, 2020. She was flown up to us from Virginia by the amazing Hound Pilot. She is the new baby in the house (Juniper is often called “the baby”). Penny Lane is happy and loving, and always wants to be near people. She loves Bark Box toys! She loves to try them all out, and quietly chew them in the same room as her people. She is very smart, and already picking up on waiting to eat (until “okay”) and learning “sit”. She is really great with Juniper, in that she is interested and likes to play, but doesn’t pester her and is adept at doggy manners. Penny has so much love to give, and is very attentive to people. She is sleeping through the night in her crate, and left out in a dog safe room when her foster parents aren’t home. She is also cat friendly, having quickly made acquaintance with our dog-savvy house cats. She is small, for now; skinny and short. We would guess she’ll be about Juniper’s size when full grown, which is 50-60 pounds. Penny found her furever home with a hound-savvy couple in New York. We can’t wait for updates as she grows!

Lando (Foster)

This boy has a heart that’s as big as his head! ABTCR has some AMAZING volunteers; Landa was flown from Virginia up to Pennsylvania on June 21st, 2020. He is the first HnH foster dog (at the new house). There’s no fence here, yet, so lots of leash time and getting fitbit steps in! We think Lando is a redbone coonhound mix, and he’ll eventually tell you he’s got some coonie in him with his song. He is SO good with the cats and with Juniper. Lando is a leaner and a lover; he’s always happy and wants to be with people from cuddles to laying on the kitchen floor while dinner is being made. He is excited by food, but takes treats so gently. He may not know his size, but he’s fairly easy on leash. Lando was adopted pretty quickly by a wonderful woman in New Hampshire with a coonhound sized hole in her heart.

Lincoln (Foster)

Lincoln (FKA Baizley) came to us via prop plane transport facilitated by ABTCR on January 8, 2020. He was such a lover; Great with dogs, cats, and children. He was gentle, though persistent in wanting pets. He loved to rest his head in our laps or curl up at your feet. He was very quickly potty trained, yay! He was more quiet than other hounds, and timid in new places. He got a LOT of attention when our in the “Adopt Me” collar and leash. He was adopted February 4th by a family that had recently lost their very beloved, old, mischievous Black and Tan hound. It was love at first sight, and HnH loves getting photo updates of him with his forever family.

Oscar (Foster)

Oskar came to us with Northeastern Coonhound Rescue (NECR) on October 26, 2019. He had happy tail, and within a week had a partial (most) tail amputation. We still found blood droplets on the walls when we moved out of that house in 2020! He was very biddable, letting us check his wound and then stitches. He was VERY food motivated and excitable if he thought you had food. This helped him learn obedience fast. He was people, dog, cat friendly – an easy transition into our home. He was adopted November 30th by German immigrants in Rhode Island. Hounds are quite unusual in their home country, and they were smitten. HnH gets update photos of him and loves to see how happy and loved he is.

Rooster (Foster)

We don’t know Rooster’s name, now, though that’s what we called him after he came to us as Chester from ABTCR on March 23, 2019. He was our first foster dog, and quite an emotional roller coaster. Rooster had separation anxiety; while not severe, was a crash course for HnH which had no experience with this condition. All in all, he was sweet as pie, and we worked out a routine, about a month into fostering, that minimized his anxiety and got the household into a comfortable groove. Unfortunately, his first adoption did not work out. His adopters tried very hard, but he was not cut out for urban living like we thought he may adapt to. He came back to us for a month after that. His second adoption fell through immediately. After that adoption he went to a foster in NY, close to his second adopters. HnH did not get any more updates about him, though on the ABTCR facebook page we saw a post that he had been adopted to a family with two other hounds. We hope he is happy and loved, in a home that accommodates his needs well.
